Spring is typically a wet, often stormy, time in the Ozarks. With saturated soils and recharged aquifers, our rivers rise quickly in response to almost any rain. Subsequently, scheduling a trip to coincide with fishable water can be a mix of good planning and luck. But when it all comes together, you’ll find some of the most actively feeding trout of the year. As an example, Ben and I enjoyed a good nymphing outing on the Meramec yesterday where the flows were just dropping into the fishable range. But after overnight storms, the river is on the rise again today. My best advice is be flexible if you can. If not, schedule a few fishing days anyway and eventually, you’ll hit it right.
