The Last of Summer

The splash of red cardinal flower, the first yellowing leaves and the low clear water on a warm afternoon all tell us that summer’s days are numbered. We still get out of the boat in just sandals and enjoy the sensation with cold spring water that only wet wading can provide. Yes, we’re still in late summer fishing mode. But in just a few days, the mornings will be crisp, the fallen leaves will drift silently beside our flies, and waders will be a welcome addition to the day’s attire. It will be fall and another wonderful year of Missouri fly fishing will enter its last chapter.
